Engineering Professional Education, Purdue University
Kelley School of Business, Indiana University

Curriculum Overview

The goal of this dual program is to provide distance education to working professional engineers. Through the course of this program, students will receive both the technical and management skills to contribute to their companies as engineers and managers. In the early part of the program, emphasis will be on furthering the students’ technical and engineering skills through engineering and related courses. In the latter part of the program, the emphasis will be on learning the management skills to complement their technical knowledge.

The program requires 60 credits to receive both a Masters of Science in Engineering degree from Purdue and an MBA from Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business with 21 credits taken directly from Purdue engineering and related-area classes, 36 credits from the Kelley School, and an elective of 3 credits that can be taken from either Purdue or Indiana. The program is designed in three parts: technical/engineering; a bridge between technical and business courses; and the business courses. These three parts are designed to mirror the career development of the student at each of these three career stages.

The requirements of the program are the following:
  • Engineering Specialization Area: 12 credits from an engineering specialization area. We expect that this specialization area will be related to the engineering degree obtained by the student. As an example, if the student has an electrical engineering undergraduate degree, then the student would augment that background by specializing in a particular area of electrical engineering for these 12 credits. Since this part of the student’s career will most likely continue on the technical side, these 12 credits will be satisfied at the beginning of the joint program to maximally benefit the career objectives of the student. Please see EPE course offerings here.
  • Bridge Courses: 15 credits in engineering/technical management. These courses will provide the bridge between the engineering and management courses. Students must choose a technical course in 3 of the following 4 areas: Economics, Operations, Information Technology, and Quantitative Analysis. A list of engineering/technical course options in each of these areas is shown in Table 1. The fourth area must be satisfied through a business course.
One of the following Kelley courses will satisfy this requirement:

C530-Economics for Managers for the Economics requirement
C580 Operations Management for the Operations area
C522-Information Technology for Managers Part 1 for the Information Technology area
C520-Quantitative Analysis for the Quantitative Analysis area

As an example, if the student chose Operations, Information Technology, and Quantitative Analysis as the technical areas, then the remaining area, Economics, must be satisfied through a business course (C530 Economics for Managers, in this case). In addition, a 3-credit course will be taken as an elective in either engineering from Purdue or business from Indiana. These 15 credits will be taken in the middle of the program.

Admission

Students must submit the following documentation to be considered for admission:

• Purdue graduate school application (please see Guidelines for EPE Students)
• Release of Information statement
• Current resume
• Three letters of reference
• Statement of purpose written by the student
• Two copies of academic transcripts of prior college or university courses and degrees earned.
Note: International applicants with an undergraduate degree from an international institution must submit the original language (official) transcript along with a copy of the diploma and certified English translations.
• Official notification of GMAT scores.
• If graduated from a foreign university, which does not teach in English, TOEFL scores or the equivalent. TOEFL score is required of international applicants who are non-native speakers of English.
• Pay $55 Application fee to Purdue EPE (this covers application fee for both programs).

Please see complete list of Application Requirements here.

Grade Standards
To be in good standing, a master’s graduate student must maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.0 out of 4.0 in Purdue and IU courses. A student not in good standing at the end of any semester will be placed on academic probation or dropped from the program.
Degrees

After 30 credits of work are completed, with at least 18 credits in engineering and 21 credits from Purdue, the student will be eligible to receive the MSE degree from Purdue (as long as the student has a 3.0 average, on a 4-point scale, in Purdue classes). After completing the 60 credits, the student will be eligible to receive the MBA degree from Kelley, as long as the student has a 3.0 average, on a 4-point scale, in Kelley classes.
