Why Purdue and Kelley – mission and vision

The mission of the dual MSE-MBA program between Purdue University’s Engineering Professional Education (EPE) and Indiana University’s Kelley Direct Online MBA is to provide quality distance education to working professional engineers. IU and Purdue are among the first research universities nationally to make available specialized graduate programs entirely through distance education.

Meeting the demands of today’s marketplace

To be successful in the dynamic business environment of today, highly motivated individuals need to have both exceptional general management capabilities and strong technical skills. The dual program merges valuable components of the EPE and Kelley programs and provides a unique educational opportunity for students interested in enhancing both their engineering acumen and general management leadership.

Now, more than ever, there is a growing population of business professionals who seek a quality advanced degree quickly, conveniently, while maintaining full-time employment. This combination of technical and managerial expertise is increasingly central to helping corporations remain competitive in a high-tech global economy.

When technology and business converge

Rapidly expanding technology creates both the opportunity and necessity to manage growth and change. Companies must continually seek new ways to boost skills and maximize productivity of employees. Engineers must prepare to move beyond their technical specialty and apply their thinking in new realms.

Formal surveys of Purdue engineering graduates show that about 25% have earned MBA degrees and another 25% have graduate engineering degrees. Current informal and formal surveys of graduating Purdue engineers indicate an even higher percentage, from 50-85%, plan to pursue an MBA degree after completing their engineering studies.

For companies, these new career paths create a coterie of engineers ready to move into management and leadership positions as their careers advance. For engineers, achieving masters’ degrees in engineering and business adds new dimensions for their careers.
