History
of the partnership
In the Spring of 2001, Purdue’s Engineering Professional Education and Indiana’s Kelley School of Business announced
a new partnership to provide graduate education to future
management at General
Motors Corporation, using the latest in information
technology.
The introduction of the dual degree program has made it
possible for GM engineers to earn both degrees from their
home or office – first the master’s of science in engineering
(MSE) from Purdue followed by the master’s in business
administration (MBA) from Indiana.
The success of the GM pilot program has generated demand
from a broad spectrum of companies and employees who recognize
the merits of combining increased technical expertise
with managerial skills and perspective. Now, the dual
MSE-MBA degree is being made available to all companies
and individuals who qualify.
Graduate degrees from
two great schools in Indiana
No other institution in Indiana offers complementary
distance education programs in engineering and business.
Few institutions in the world offer the quality of Purdue
Engineering and Indiana’s Kelley School of Business. Purdue’s
Engineering Professional Education and Indiana’s Kelley
Direct Online MBA share similar philosophies:
• both programs are top 20 or higher in their fields
• degrees offered are the same as their high quality on-campus
degrees
• both accommodate the needs of working professionals
requiring little or no time on campus
• students have flexibility to take courses in the sequence
that best fits their needs while each program maintains
required prerequisites
• both programs are committed to providing access at a
reasonable price
• both faculties are committed to distance education and
view this as a valuable service for students, industry
and their academic institutions
Distance education for working
professionals
Historically, corporations have found it challenging
to recruit and retain engineers because of the difficulty
in providing career paths for them. This dual MSE-MBA
degree program provides distinct career pathways through
engineering into management.
Engineers are trained to use mathematical equations and
technology to solve engineering problems while managers
emphasize financial strategies and people skills. Those
pursuing the dual degree will learn the human side of
technology and combine engineering problem solving with
financial strategizing. Those completing the dual degree
will possess the potential to move their companies in
exciting new directions.
From the Deans’ perspective
IU Kelley School Dean Dan Dalton says, "We at the
Kelley School of Business are delighted with our partnership
with Purdue University's Schools of Engineering. It is
said that you are known by the company you keep; this
is, indeed, terrific company. Most importantly, however,
it is the students who will benefit from the concerted
efforts and resources of this program."
Purdue Dean of Engineering Linda P. B. Katehi says, "This
dual MSE-MBA program offers a singular opportunity for
professional engineers to develop into tomorrow's technology
leaders. We're extremely pleased to work in partnership
with IU's Kelley School of
Business to make this program happen."
About
Purdue University
Purdue Engineering and Engineering Professional Education (EPE)
By nature and definition, the engineering field is dynamic
and scientifically and technologically driven. This requires
that engineers regularly update their knowledge, skills
and credentials. At Purdue, these opportunities have been
available through Engineering Professional Education (EPE)
by distance education since 1957. Purdue engineering is
consistently ranked
among the top ten engineering graduate programs.
Now one of the largest distance education programs in
engineering anywhere in the world, EPE’s Fall 2002 enrollment
was nearly 600 graduate students at some 200 sites in
32 states and eight countries.
EPE has earned a reputation for quality and excellent
personal service to its students, helping to facilitate
a successful path through the program requirements. More
than 1,600 EPE graduates are now working all over the
world. Purdue’s engineering faculty members are world-renowned
experts in their fields, providing students with current
knowledge, skills and techniques.
